Family Tradition Fuels the Erdman Family

Nestled in the rolling hills of Augusta, Wis., the Erdman family farm is a symbol of hard work, dedication, and deep-rooted family values. Operated by the fourth generation of Erdmans, the farm has evolved over the years, transitioning from dairy to beef and grain production. For Steve and Heather Erdman, it is not just a business; it's a way of life that binds their family together, one chore at a time.

This legacy goes back to Steve’s great-grandfather who initially worked the farm’s hilly land for peas before realizing the need for sustainable practices. Now, the land is used for grazing livestock, a decision Steve acknowledged as essential for protecting the farm's future. "Land is the most expensive investment a farmer will ever make," he said, "and if you don’t take care of it, it’s not going to take care of you."

The Erdmans always put in the effort and care to ensure their animals' health and well-being from birth to market. Each year, their cows have around 55 calves, which the family nurtures and raises. "The hard work that you put in, you get a reward out of it in the end," Steve said. They pride themselves on producing safe, quality beef, knowing every step of the process.

Heather brings a unique perspective. Having grown up without an agriculture background, she admitted, “It was a big change. I grew up on the back side of the farm and had never really been on a farm until after I met Steve.” While the lifestyle was an adjustment, she sees its value for her children. “Our kids work hard and are learning a good work ethic at a young age,” she explained.

Farm life instills values and experiences that reach far beyond the fields for their children Hayden, Hayley, Hadley, and Holden. Hayley said she and Hayden are up at 5:30 each morning to feed and wash their fair animals. “We mix feed for all of our other animals too,” she added. "We make sure they have bedding, water, and hay every day." This daily dedication has taught her the importance of responsibility. "We get to experience things that some other kids don’t," she said.

Hayden agreed that the work is demanding but he also sees the bigger picture. “At the end of the day, all the work I put in with my animals is going to be something that somebody else, a consumer, is going to eat, and that's going to be a good product.” For Hayden, it’s this sense of purpose that drives him, knowing that their efforts contribute to providing high-quality beef for consumers.

Their younger siblings, Hadley and Holden, are just as invested in the farm, eager to help and learn. Hadley enjoys assisting her dad and siblings with the cows and finds a special fondness for their Herefords. Holden, the youngest, is always enthusiastic about lending a hand. He says he enjoys “running around on the farm” and helping with chores like feeding and watering the cows.

For the Erdmans, farming is more than just an occupation; it’s a family endeavor that fosters a sense of pride, responsibility, and connection to the land and animals in their care. Their commitment to providing a safe, quality product for consumers runs through every part of their operation, a testament to the values that sustain their family farm and community alike.
