A Family Legacy 
The roots of Riechers Beef date back to the 1940s when Bill Riechers began farming. Over the decades, the family evolved from a small operation to managing 500-700 mixed-breed cattle and 400 acres of land. Mark Riechers, who joined the farm in 1975, has led the transition into modern farming techniques with his son Joe, ensuring the farm's sustainability and growth. 

Focus on Conservation 
The Riechers family's approach to farming goes beyond cattle rearing; they have partnered with Discovery Farms, a University of Wisconsin-Madison initiative focused on the relationship between agriculture and water quality. This collaboration has allowed them to implement research-driven practices that minimize environmental impact while maximizing productivity. 

Their conservation efforts include using no-till planting methods to reduce soil erosion, constructing terraces and waterways to control water runoff, and rotating crops to improve soil health. Their innovative approach has not only protected their land but has also served as a model for other farmers. 

Sustainability in agriculture is complex, and the Riechers family has faced their fair share of challenges. From tackling soil erosion to experimenting with cover crops, they have shown resilience and adaptability. For instance, they moved away from cover crops like rye due to increased erosion and instead focused on maintaining soil health through crop residue and manure application.  

The farm also uses technology to enhance efficiency. They have developed proprietary software to manage cattle feed, making data-driven decisions that optimize feed use and improve cattle health.
