The McComish farm utilizes by-products from the local cheese factory as a part of their cattle feed. This method is more economical for the farmer and a great source of nutrients for the cows; and it also reduces waste and therefore helps the environment.
Joe and Amber, as well as Joe’s parents, own and operate a 220 head dairy farm in Darlington, Wisconsin. Both Joe and Amber were raised on dairy farms and are proud to continue the legacy of being dedicated Wisconsin dairy farmers.
The McComish Family loves life on the farm. Even through the struggles of weather and market prices for dairy products, the farm is operated with love and care for their animals. “The farm is the best place to raise kids.” Amber said. “They learn responsibility and respect for the land and animals at a very young age.” Amber and Joe look forward to teaching their three children the importance of being an excellent dairy farmer and watching them develop a love for the animals, just like their parents have.
Dairy farmers are able to make breeding decisions that allow them to be key players in both the dairy and beef industries. The McComish family breeds a portion of their herd to beef breeds to add more value to their farm. Traditional beef and dairy beef are both excellent sources of protein and a part of a healthy diet.
It is very important to farmers that they be as efficient and friendly to the environment as possible. The McComish farm utilizes by-products from the local cheese factory as a part of their cattle feed. This method is more economical for the farmer and a great source of nutrients for the cows; and it also reduces waste and therefore helps the environment. “We have to make sure the land and the environment is left better than we received it from our parents. Reducing waste is one way to accomplish that.” Joe said.
The McComish family works very closely with their local veterinarian to ensure the health of their animals. The farm is enrolled in a “herd health plan” with their veterinarian. “Having a close relationship with a veterinarian is the best option for our farm and our cattle.” Joe said. “Being able to rely on a professional in animal health is an asset to our farm.”
As dedicated Wisconsin dairy and beef farmers, the McComish family takes pride in producing high quality beef and dairy products for their family and yours.
