BEEF FACTS:
- Health professionals often suggest we should “choose
fats wisely” – especially as part of a heart-healthy
lifestyle. The good news is that lean beef easily fits within
this recommendation since many cuts of beef are 20 percent
leaner than USDA data indicated just 14 years ago. Nineteen
cuts of beef meet government guidelines for leanness.
- Most people incorrectly think beef contains mostly saturated
fat. Actually, half the fatty acids in beef are monounsaturated
fatty acids, the same heart-healthy kind found in olive
oil.
- Lean beef is naturally rich in essential nutrients that
fuel active lifestyles. One 3-ounce serving of beef is an
excellent source of five essential nutrients: protein, zinc,
vitamin B12, selenium and phosphorus. And it’s a good
source of niacin, vitamin B6, iron and riboflavin.
- When preparing lean beef as part of a heart-healthy meal:
- Look for the words “round” or “loin”
when buying lean beef cuts.
- Choose lean ground beef. Ninety-one percent lean
or leaner ground beef meets government guidelines for
lean or extra lean and can have as few as five grams
of total fat per 3-ounce serving.
- Trim visible fat away from beef prior to cooking
and rinse ground beef to reduce fat.
